U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently approved OpenSky herbicide by Dow AgroSciences. The product targets broadleaf weeds and grasses in wheat and durum fields.

“OpenSky will offer winter and spring wheat growers consistent control of high-anxiety grasses, such as wild oats, yellow foxtail and cheatgrass,” says Joe Yenish, field scientist with Dow AgroSciences. “Difficult broadleaf weeds, including kochia, mustards and wild buckwheat are also no match for the new herbicide.”

The herbicide contains two active ingredients: Group 2 (ALS inhibitors) and group 4 (synthetic auxins). Dow recommends farmers apply one pint of OpenSky to actively growing spring wheat from three-leaf stage until flag leaf emergence. With winter wheat, they say farmers can apply one to 1.25 pints from three leaf stage to flag leaf emergence in the fall or spring.

Pending state registration, the herbicide will be available for use in 2018. According to the company, there are no rotation restrictions and it is compatible with fungicides, insecticides and other herbicides.
